And We're Back....

The 2012 school year began just over a month ago and in addition to welcoming 19 new preschool students, we also greeted 15 of our returning students from 2011 into our recently established kindergarten class. We're delighted to have one more year to work with our preschool "graduates" and we are ecstatic to share our program with so many new children.

We're off to a productive and positive start to the school year. We've been painting, cutting, singing, dancing, laughing, reading, building and creating. We're looking forward to sharing snapshots our our days at La Puerta Abierta with you via our blog. Enjoy!

Tortillas

In honor of Guatemalan Independence Day, we've been exploring Guatemalan culture, art and history at La Escuelita Puerta Abierta. Last week we completed our learning unit by preparing one of the most traditional and delicious Guatemalan foods...tortillas! Our students loved squishing the moist dough in their hands and clapping them into tortilla form.

Celebration!

September 15th marked Guatemala's Independence Day or what we recognized at La Puerta Abierta as Guatemala's birthday. In honor of the special day, we organized a Dia del Campo to celebrate!

Creepy Crawly....

Ms. Candelaria has been focusing on animals at La Puerta Abierta. Our students have been learning all about vertebrates and invertebrates. We've read stories about animals, created animal art, and even went on an animal "safari" in our neighborhood.

We especially enjoyed learning about creepy crawly worms and some of us were brave enough to touch them!
